Now that you are here, you are probably wondering who D.K. Mckenzie is and I will try to explain. First and foremost, I consider myself an artist first. I like the term artist as it is a broad description and I don’t necessarily ascribe to one art form. These days I would maybe narrow it down a bit and say that I am a writer and musician. Again, I find I’m more than these two definitions but this is a good starting point.
My current project is a bi-weekly podcast I call The Poe Underground. It is a spoken-word music project. In each episode I showcase original music that I compose and marry with poetry. Some of the poetry is my own, and other times they are public domain pieces. This project is a vehicle for me to explore two art forms I love dearly and bring them together. This is how I’ve spent the last nine months of my life, exploring the bounds of creating new music and joining voice and words to it. As a writer I have self-published five ebooks and produced two audiobooks and wish to continue to write and survive by the fruits of my work.
In all honesty, I gave up pursing music seriously, as I found it difficult to make sense of the music industry and how I could fit in to that world. In 2022 during the pandemic, I decided to give it one last go and sought to create a spoken-word music album as an experiment mostly. That album turned out to be a sonic success from my viewpoint. Finishing the album I call Neptune: Dreams of Venus, galvanized me to move forward with more recordings and exploring the idea of joining voice, poetry, and music.
A long story short: My long break from music didn’t affect my ability to play the various instruments I play. In fact, one reason for the experimental album was to get back into to producing, composing, and playing my various instruments. Now, all these months later, I can see that my so-called musical chops have gotten better and am happy with my recordings, compositional ideas, and musical performances.
To work on music for clients as a session musician is a strong desire of mine as I feel I have a lot to contribute musically. My imagination is a reservoir I feel I have only skimmed the surface of. When you work with me you are getting skill, imagination, experience, and talent all in one package.
I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
D.K. Mckenzie – April twenty third, 2024
